Every child needs someone who believes in them. Mentoring provides children with the single greatest advantage they need to grow up successfully: friendship with a caring adult. Mentoring at UCS provides an opportunity for mentors and mentees to to have a supported one-to-one relationship where children develop self confidence and assurance.

What is a mentor?
A mentor is a compassionate, caring adult who makes the choice to devote their time to a young person. A mentor is invested in the success of a mentee by offering support, guidance, and encouragement. With a one hour a week commitment you can transform a life by helping a child establish goals, build a solid foundation of values, improve academic and life skills, all while developing their self esteem and confidence.

What is a lunchtime mentor?
A lunchtime mentor is a compassionate, caring adult who meets for lunch on a weekly basis with their mentee at the child’s school. This is a wonderful way to make a difference.

Activities for everyone:

Once a month an optional free group activity is planned for our mentors and mentees. This allows for time spent together with a larger group of volunteers and mentees. Activities include ice skating, attending plays, hiking, swimming and bowling among others.

Research demonstrates kids who receive mentoring are:
• 46 % less likely to begin using illegal drugs
• 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
• 52% less likely to skip school
• 56% more likely to receive higher grades

Other benefits of a child having a mentor include:
• Positive thinking
• Increased self-confidence
• Reduction in anxiety
• Forging strong relationships with others
• Learning methods to cope with stress

Mentoring at UCS is looking for individuals who want to make a difference.  You can open the doors to a whole new world.

“I support mentoring because children need positive influences and I care about by community.”…..Sam, Mentor
