— Over 70 children aged 3 to 5 participated in the Head Start Soccer Clinic sponsored by NSK Steering Systems America, Inc. (NSK). The annual fall clinic took place on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings throughout September, with local children who participate free of charge, thanks to the generosity of NSK.
“By participating in this soccer clinic, the children formed some special friendships with peers, but have also learned the importance of goal-setting, teamwork, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle,” said Shannon VanderWoude, Head Start Family & Community Partnership Manager. “We know that this clinic sparks an interest in soccer resulting in many children going on to play in elementary school, and we thank NSK for providing the resources to make this clinic happen each year.”
Willow Park is filled with parents and participants each day of the clinic. Parents are encouraged to be involved and play on the field with the children during exercises, helping the children to feel more comfortable. A positive indirect result of the parental participation is the reinforcement that being active is part of a normal family routine.
Ben Nichols, Human Resources Manager at NSK outlined their focus on community involvement in supporting the soccer clinic, “NSK recognizes the importance of supporting the local community in our efforts to have a positive impact as a good neighbor. Our employees live and work in Bennington, and we’ve emphasized the importance of getting involved and supporting great events. The Head Start soccer clinic is one of those events we know makes a difference.”
